Understanding Unusual Beliefs & Recovery

Unusual beliefs or “psychotic delusions” are a powerful way of coping with challenging social experiences. Traditional psychiatric approaches have tried to get rid of “delusions”. However, it is important to validate their emotional meanings and support the person to change their relationship with their beliefs.

Aims
The aim of this workshop is to explore how support can be given using holistic approaches to change the relationship with beliefs.

Who is this course for?
Suitable for anyone wishing to understand  and help those who have unusual beliefs toward recovery including; mental health workers/social services professionals, psychotherapists and counsellors, voluntary sector workers, trauma victims and survivors, their friends and family.

Course summary
This workshop will reflect on people’s personal experiences of unusual beliefs and includes:

  • The social context and normality of delusions
  • Understanding how delusions are protective
  • Working alongside unusual beliefs
  • Stories of recovery and empowerment
  • Psychotherapeutic approaches with underlying meanings beliefs represent
